A week ago I started running again for the first time in over a year. I've been pushing myself hard every single day. Today I was running on a trail, and I passed a guy. He made eye contact and gave me a thumbs up. I was running back and I passed him again. This time he said, "Keep it up buddy." I don't know why, but that was like rocket fuel. I was almost blown up, but that got me going and I finished strong. I saw him again on my last lap. He asked me about my goal for the day and we talked fo...

No man knows how bad he is till he has tried very hard to be good. A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is. After all, you find out the strength of the German army by fighting against it, not by giving in. You find out the strength of a wind by trying to walk against it, not by lying down. A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes simply does not know what it would...

When the British were still ruling India many petty rajahs were in the army. A certain British general was particularly displeased with one such rajah during a military campaign. This rajah was unsoldierlike in many things: he would, for instance, insist on riding while the others walked; nor would he lend a hand to get the equipment over the rough hills. The general bided his time to deliver a lesson to the proud prince. The day was unbearably hot. The prince was riding. Just ahead a group of s...

"Sometimes I believe it is best to take the child's approach to life, which assumes no limitation at all. Children set out to do things without knowing that they are not supposed to be able to do them." -Les Brown
Children believe they can catch the moon and put it on a string like a kite; they believe they will be fed when they are hungry without worrying about how that will happen; they feel completely safe with an average-sized father even when threatened by a giant; they believe pr...

I like Google's corporate motto: 'Don't be evil.' It's probably an anagram of something but I still like it. If you want to lie, cheat, steal, defraud, lose sleep, hide, dodge the law in any way, break the rules or generally behave badly to make your money, then don't do it. It isn't worth it. If earning money or being wealthy stops being fun - and by being bad it really will stop being fun - then there's no point doing it. If you don't enjoy the challenge of earning money in a decent way, then...

Today the kids and I went to the grocery store before the storm came in. When we made it outside to load our groceries the tornado alarms went off. We loaded our things and got on our way home. On the way down a busy street (St. Charles Rock Rd.) We passed this man trying so hard to get his wheelchair off the main road. We pulled in and asked him if he needed help. He said yes and that he lived about a block away. Without a second thought Seth jumped out of the car and pushed this man who was a...

For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the message was lost.
For want of a message the battle was lost.
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.
-Author Unknown
The piece above is a proverb that has had numerous variations over many centuries, reminding us all about how our seemingly unimportant actions or o...

When I was younger, I always knew my parents had trouble with money. We would go to yard sales all the time, buy everyday supplies at Dollarama and work and eat at a soup kitchen 4 nights a week. Then, a new man walked into the soup kitchen and asked me what my name was. As I told him my name was Angela, my mom handed me the soup ladle and hair net to start getting to work. After that, I couldn't find the strange man again. I searched everywhere and even asked the other men and women in the kitc...

"So long as even a dog in my country is without food,  my whole religion will be to feed it." -Vivekananda
In Hebrews 6:10 we read that "God is not unfair. He will not forget the work you did or the love you showed for him in the help you gave and are still giving to other Christians." We are called to serve; and Jesus, by His example, has shown us the perfect picture of what service, in its truest form, ought to look like. True service means loving your neighbour as you love yourself....

When I was a boy I dreamt of my future. I was going to be a cowboy. I loved all the old westerns on television. Then I dreamt of being a sailor and a soldier and fighting epic battles. After that I dreamt of being a fire fighter and rescuing people from burning buildings. I just couldn't wait to grow up and be an adult. Then I went to college and those dreams changed. I thought I would be a psychologist, then I switched to being a teacher, and I also wanted to be a bestselling author. When I mar...
